What’s it like on the Aran Islands

You have to be quite a hardy individual to live on the Aran Islands. As the modern world ahs caught up with it the population has shrunk considerably since it;s heydays of the 19th Century. The social- political and economical problems that beset Ireland at the time, before and after did not help the situation. Still if you fancy it what’s it like?

Before you go you’d better look at the part. You’ll need to have a nice set of  Aran Sweaters like those that you can get from Shamrock Gift. These practical but fashionable sweaters help to keep the nip of the island’s climate out and they will also resist the seawater and rain that is a constant.  That’s the first thing to remember. The Islands are the furthest western point in Europe so as a result that tends to get a battering for the Atlantic ocean and the storms it generates. The isles help to break them up before they hit the mainland.

On the Island itself the populace enjoy most of the comforts of the modern world. However, gas and mains electricity can be tricky. Wind Farms are probably going to make up the future mucha s they do in the Western isles of Scotland and the Outer Hebrides. The same is true of the Spanish islands of Lanazrote. For now the use of oil burners are the main option. There isn’t the best connection for the Internet either but with the scenery it’s probable you’ll be out for most of the time drinking it in any way.
