How Solar Panel Installation Is Surveyed Before Work Starts

Roof Condition and Age

Check roof tiles for signs of wear or damage to felt and flashing. If a roof is likely to require work within a 20+ year period of a solar panel installation then it is far better to carry out the necessary work before the array is installed rather than having to remove the array and re-install it at a later date.

Pitch and Orientation

The surveyor will calculate the roof’s pitch and orientation as these two factors will affect how much electricity your solar panels will generate. Typically south facing with a roof pitch of between 30 and 45 degrees will generate the most electricity, but the surveyor will calculate the exact amount for your specific roof.

Structural Load-Bearing Capacity Solar Panel Installation is covered in more detail at https://www.precisiongreenenergy.co.uk/renewables/solar-panel-installation/.

A typical solar array weighs around 15 to 20kg/m2 for the panels themselves and the frame. We check the load bearing capacity of your roof’s rafters and joists to ensure that they can safely hold the weight of your solar array.

Consumer Unit and Wiring

We also check your existing consumer unit for sufficient space in the consumer unit for the additional circuit from your new solar system. We also look at the route for existing cables running from the roof down to your existing meter and whether any of these may need to be upgraded as part of your solar panel installation.

DNO Connection Requirements

Your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) needs to be informed of the grid connected solar system before it is switched on. The rules governing how DNO connections are regulated are set out by Ofgem. The survey will detail the type of connection your property requires and any necessary approval required as part of the solar panel installation process. For more information on solar panel installation surveys and quotes see Precision Green Energy.

Once the surveyor has completed all of the checks needed to ensure your property is suitable for solar panel installation, the survey will give the necessary information to plan your installation.
