Platform Boundaries Matter More Than the Model Name
Audi Steering Racks for Audi A4 (B5, B6, B7, B8) generation change from one platform to another, within model type (as opposed to model name). So, for example, a B7 Rack will not fit into a B6 shell (even though the two cars look very similar), due to differences in mounting points, tie-rod threads and steering rack valve configuration.
Facelifts Can Change Port Configurations
The port positions for the hydraulic connections (sensitivity/petal) and any speed-sensor connections (where fitted) may have been altered as part of a mid-life facelift, even within a single generation. Engine Choice Affects Rack Type
The engine of an A3 or TT can be a very important factor in steering rack identification, even within the same model year. A car fitted with a 2.0 TDI engine will likely require a different steering rack to a 3.2 V6 version of the same model year.
Use the VIN Build Date, Not the Registration Year

Compare Part Numbers Before Confirming a Reconditioned Unit
When sourcing a reconditioned steering rack, it is essential to compare the original part number of the steering rack being returned with the part number of the replacement unit. Some Audis on the same platform can have differing length tie-rod ends or different lock-stop positions, often not specified in a model year search.
Get the build date from your VIN before you order a part and avoid a costly return trip and re-fit!
