Power Steering Pump Mounting Checks Before Ordering

You might want to check the mounting on the pump you want to order as well to avoid having a part that does not fit in the engine. A few minutes under the bonnet will tell you if the part is right or not.

Count and Position the Mounting Bolt Holes

Count and Position the Mounting Bolt Holes. The mounting of the pump to the engine is via several holes in the engine bracket for the pump mounting bolts. Note how many holes there are and their relative position to each other (normally in a triangular or square formation).

Check the Pulley Type and Depth

Determine whether the pulley is a serpentine (multi-rib) or V-belt type and measure the depth of the pulley with a straight edge. If the replacement unit has a pulley of a different depth then the belt will likely wear rapidly or become noisy very quickly.

Confirm Port Positions and Thread Sizes

The location and thread size of the high-pressure outlet and return inlet need to be checked. The port locations on apparently identical pumps can differ. The thread sizes can be checked with a thread gauge.

Check the Bracket and Adjuster Slot Orientation

Are the adjuster slots on the pump body the same orientation as the bracket? Take a picture of this before removing it from the engine.

Note the Reservoir Configuration

Check if the new pump has an integral reservoir or if it needs to be supplied with fuel from a remote reservoir, and check how this is connected by hose. Integral and remote type reservoirs are not interchangeable and will give problems if fitted incorrectly.

All of these checks can be done prior to purchasing a steering pump, thus avoiding possible returns due to incorrect fitment.
