What Steering Part Numbers Mean

Part numbers look a bit confusing – like a random string of letters and numbers. In reality, however, each section of the number tells you something specific about the parts you require to fit a steering component.

Read the Number in Sections

A Part number will typically consist of a manufacturer or brand prefix, a part number which identifies the basic component and a suffix which can contain information on any variant of that part as well as revision information. For example ZF 7D0 422 055 B consists of a brand prefix, a base part number and a variant letter.

OEM and Aftermarket Numbers Differ

The OEM number of a vehicle manufacturer will normally differ from that of a part supplied by an aftermarket manufacturer, even when the part is identical. OEM numbers and aftermarket part numbers are listed for steering parts.

Superseded Numbers Still Work

Obsolete part numbers are valid numbers that have been superseded by the manufacturer, and are guaranteed to find the current replacement part in supplier databases.

Cross-Reference Against Your VIN

While a car’s model name will often reflect the part types used within it, in most cases, the number of the steering parts for similar model year cars can differ from car to car. By cross-referencing a car’s steering parts number with the car’s Vehicle Identification Number (or ‘Chassis Number’) and/or the car’s Engine Number, approval information can be located and confirmed for that specific car’s steering parts.

When a Number Is Partial or Missing

Even if a part number has worn away but some numbers are visible, include them in your enquiry along with the registration number, engine number and a description of where the part was situated. Most suppliers can locate a suitable replacement part using this information.

A part number enables easy ordering of steering parts. If a part number cannot be read, then the vehicle details (e.g. registration number, engine number, location of part fitted) will be required to identify the correct steering parts.
