From book adaptations to the return of popular shows, these are the best TV dramas that are coming our way in the autumn this year.

Butterfly

No stranger to TV dramas, Anna Friel takes on another emotional role as Vicky, the mother of an 11-year-old transgender child, who clashes with her ex on how best to support their child. The drama will air on ITV later in the year.

Maniac

With its intriguing trailer already setting tongues wagging, the Netflix series sees Emma Stone and Jonah Hill reunite as strangers involved in a mysterious drug trial. Part drama, part black comedy, this limited series makes its way to our screens in September.

Vanity Fair

This adaptation of the 1848 William Makepeace Thackeray classic will see a whole host of famous faces grace our screen when it airs on ITV in the autumn. Olivia Cooke takes the lead, whilst Martin Clunes, Suranne Jones, Anthony Head and Michael Palin all appear as regulars in this seven-part series.

Doctor Who

The highly anticipated return of this classic sci-fi show sees Jodie Whittaker debut as the thirteenth Doctor. With the new cast also come new gadgets, including a fresh new take on the Tardis. House of Cards

Mothers Day

This 90-minute one-off BBC2 drama follows the aftermath of the 1993 Warrington bombings in which two children lost their lives and many more were injured. Marking the 25th anniversary, Vicky McClure and Anna Maxwell Martin appear as two women affected by the tragedy, each in different way.

Outlander

This is returning to Amazon Prime Video for a fourth season. Fans of the time-travel drama will get to see what new challenges await Claire and Jamie in the adaptation of the fourth book in the Diana Gabaldon series.
